Origami 3.4 beta

16 Jun 2025

The update brings a shiny new scene preview and a new folding engine with a long awaited feature. Read on for more details.

New Scene Preview

Origami got a brand new rendering engine for preview. It comes with a neat shadow and better lighting, so you can easier see the shapes’ geometry.

There is a rendering quality option under the “View” menu if the preview runs slow, but it should work fine with the best quality on more or less modern hardware.

Another neat feature of the new preview engine, is the gizmo. Now you can easily move the shapes around with your mouse. Use the icons at the bottom or hotkeys 1, 2, 3 to switch the gizmo modes.

The camera animation was also improved, so everything looks smooth and nice when you edit the scene.

New Folding Engine

This update comes with Folding Engine V4, the fourth generation of folding engines in Origami. This is an important update as it changes the way Origami analyzes the dieline and checks it for errors. You’ll get more predictable dielines, better verification and (best of all) no more “Triangulation error” problems!

The new folding engine has a lot of changes compared to V3 and the earlier ones, so you will get a slightly different set of errors for your dielines. Some are new, some are the old ones just named a bit different. Anyway, all the errors are covered in our updated tutorials page with lots of details and helpful drawings.

Finally, you can always switch back to the older folding engine, if needed.

Feel free to contact us if you have any issues with the new folding engine that you didn’t have earlier and if the tutorials mentioned above don’t help.

One More Thing

The new folding engine comes with the folding animation support. Finally, you can specify the way the box is folded and see it right in Origami using the animation slider.

Give it a try using the built-in “Pizza Box” shape.

Note that the shapes made with the online generator comes without animation for now, but you can configure them yourself. Also, the animation is not (yet) exported to 3D models. We’re going to address this in the near future.
