Boxshot 5.8.7

05 Nov 2024

Boxshot 5.8 is out of beta. If you haven’t tried the beta builds, read below as you’ll find a lot of new features in this update. For those who used the beta versions of 5.8, this update comes with some minor bugfixes.

Physics Simulation

Boxshot now features a physics simulation tool that lets you apply gravity to the selected scene object. They will fall down, colliding between themselves and the rest of the scene. Great for filling bowls with small items and things like that.

Palletize Tool

Another new tool in this update is Palletize which lets you pick an object and clone it to fill the pallet. Save a lot of time and have some nice options to configure the layout.

Custom Materials

You can now add your own materials to the Assets panel on the left. Simply drag the material from the right panel to Assets and name it. Same as with custom shapes.

New Shapes

This update comes with dieline box shape that lets you use Origami–like boxes right in Boxshot. There’s just a few of them and will never be that many as in Origami, but it is still good to have some, right?

Two more new shapes are: Cuboid, when you simply need a box, and Coil — perfect for screws, bottle necks, caps etc. You’ll find them in the Simple Shapes section.

Improved Snapshots

Snapshots now save scene parameters and objects positions. You can show and hide scene elements, configure backgrounds and of course the camera position.

Best of all, the new Transition Animation tool lets you render transitions between multiple snapshots, so you can make complex animations right in Boxshot!

Lathe Improvements

You can now select more than one curve element in Lathe editor for easier material assignment. There’s a number of new buttons in the editor toolbar to help with selecting the right elements.

There is also a new button at the bottom of the Lathe panel that lets you fill that lathe object with liquid. It makes a new Lathe object of the proper shape and fit it right into place.

Instances Improvements

Operations with instances are moved to the scene context menu from the tools submenu to be more accessible.

You can now create instances with Ctrl/Cmd+Shift+C keyboard shortcut.

The new Convert to Instances tool can quickly scan the scene for similar shapes and convert them all to instances, so changing one will change all of them. This is great for heavy and complex scenes, as instances greatly improve the scene processing time.

Faster Scene Loading

This update uses some tricks to load complex scenes faster. You will also notice that some long operation got progress bars, so you can see how much is to wait.

Other Changes

Besides everything listed above, the update features some extra stuff:

  • You can now search the scene tree with Cmd/Ctrl+F;
  • You can locate the selected element in the scene tree using the Reveal in Scene Tree item of the context menu;
  • Step and Repeat tool now handles multiple objects;
  • You can switch between the full scene and selected elements in Fit to View;
  • The right panel stays if nothing is selected;
  • There’s an option in settings to create more 3rd–party friendly OBJ files;
  • Camera got Automatic Z Near/Z Far mode, enabled by default;
  • Export to GLB format added;
  • 3D HTML exporter improved;
  • and many more.

There’s a number of other improvements and speed–ups across the app and you will definitely love the update!
